Antibiotics could soon become so ineffective that a sore throat or grazed knee could kill.

The Director General of the World Health Organisation, is warning the world is fast approaching the post-antibiotic era, as more and more people develop resistance to the drug.

Margaret Chan said if the problem went unchecked, routine operations like hip replacements could become too risky to carry out.
